Permaculture / Agro-ecology

The shared philosophy of HUG and Suubi Secondary School strongly believes that education is not simply about achieving good grades, instead it’s about equipping our students with the skills they need to go out into the world and shape it for themselves, their communities and the environment.

Currently Uganda’s education systems is conventionally designed and focused on attaining academic excellence rather than hands on solutions to problems at hand. Unfortunately students currently lack knowledge and skills on sustainable farming that are climate change resilient. In response to this, Suubi SS has embarked on re-directing the conventional education system; encouraging students to not only excel academically but also  enabling them to embrace agriculture in a rewarding, sustainable and practical way, based on agro-ecological and permaculture practices.

The school has created gardens and livestock projects onsite that have become live laboratories where a number of subjects and skills can be passed on to students. Learning in the garden is interwoven in to subjects including agriculture, biology, geography, mathematics, english, building, metal works and music.

In addition to acquiring sustainable farming skills, the students and staff reap the harvest from the garden and livestock. This greatly enhance their diet whilst encouraging them to appreciate farming, and fostering a generation of  responsible, future earth-minded farmers.
